Colonel Bryan Chapman joined the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) in May of 2011 as an Army Fellow. Prior to his arrival at the APCSS, he completed a deployment in support of Operation New Dawn in Mosul and Kirkuk, Iraq. During the deployment, he served as a Military Advisor to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) where he synchronized United Nations operations with the U.S. Department of State Provincial Reconstruction Team and with U.S. Forces-Iraq.
Col. Chapman has extensive experience in the Asia-Pacific Region which includes serving as the U.S. Senior Defense Official and Defense Attaché in Kathmandu, Nepal, and as the Special Assistant to the U.S. Ambassador to India, Robert Blackwill, and as an Army Attaché in New Delhi. As a Special Forces Officer, he deployed for training and operational missions to Thailand, Laos, and Sri Lanka. Additionally, Col. Chapman spent two years in the Republic of Korea as a Combat Engineer Company Commander and Battalion Staff Officer. He has studied Thai, Vietnamese, and Nepali languages.
Col. Chapman has a Master of International Policy from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), a Masters of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science from West Virginia University and is currently working on a Master of Strategic Studies.
Col. Chapman entered the Army as a Combat Engineer officer before volunteering for and completing Special Forces training and branch transfer. For the past nine years, he has worked exclusively as a South Asia Foreign Area Officer. He is a graduate of some of the Army’s most challenging courses to include Airborne School, Ranger School, Special Forces Qualification Course, the Command and General Staff College, and he is currently enrolled in the Army War College.
