Colonel Michael R. Lwin is the U.S. Army War College Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, Honolulu, Hawaii for the 2012 Academic Year.
Col. Lwin is a Distinguished Military Graduate from the Georgetown University R.O.T.C. program and currently has over twenty-two years of service as an Infantry and Military Information Support Operations Officer.
The majority of his Army assignments have been in or related to the Asia-Pacific region. Col. Lwin commanded an Infantry company along the Korean Demilitarized Zone, trained as a Chinese linguist at the Defense Language Institute, graduated from the Singapore Command and Staff Course, and served as a Joint Staff Officer at the U.S. Pacific Command headquarters. While at U.S. Pacific Command, he deployed in support of Operation UNIFIED ASSISTANCE (Asian Tsunami disaster relief). His most recent command was of a regionally-aligned battalion which deployed Military Information Support teams to Special Operations Task Forces and Country Teams throughout the region. His official duties have carried him to eleven countries in the Asia-Pacific and he has visited four others on personal leave.
Col. Lwin has deployed in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. As a military officer, he has a background in training to include duty at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California. From his last assignment at the U.S. Army’s John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, he has experience in the assessment and selection of personnel as well as talent management. He is also Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger, and Jumpmaster qualified.
Col. Lwin holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Economics from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a Master’s degree in Defense Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Management from the University of Western Australia. He has an interest in strategy and has published articles in Joint Force Quarterly, Army, Naval Institute Proceedings, and Infantry.
