# 07-135 New APCSS Faculty Publication... APCSS Professor Dr. Ehsan Ahrari recently published a new paper called “Why the Long War Can and Cannot be Compared to the Cold War.” Published in “Comparative Strategy” (Volume 26), the paper compares and contrasts the Cold War between the United States and Russia with the ongoing “Long War” with “jihadist” terrorist groups. How did the term “Long War” come about? Is it more dangerous than the “Cold War?” According to Dr. Ahrari, “even though there are some similarities between this concept and the concept of "Cold War," the unique nature of the long war is making it difficult for the United States to develop an effective winning strategy. For the long war to conclude in America's favor, both Iraq and Afghanistan have to be stabilized and have effective governments, which should be perceived as legitimate by their respective citizens.”
