Area of Expertise - Counterterrorism, Culture and Religion

Dr.
Ehsan Ahrari came to the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in
January 2007 as Professor of Counterterrorism. His primary areas
of expertise include Counterterrorism (Middle East, South Asia, and
Central Asia), Nuclear and Missile Proliferation in Southern Asia
(China, India, and Pakistan), Islam, Information Warfare, with
special focus on China and the world of Islam, and Public Diplomacy,
with special focus on Muslim countries. His other areas of
expertise include Interagency Coordination, Wargaming, and writing
scenarios for tabletop exercises. He has offered Senior Executive
Seminars on Transnational Terrorist Financing, Public Diplomacy,
Jihadist-Salafi Movements, with special focus on South Asia, Central
Asia, and the Middle East.
He was
CEO of Strategic Paradigms, a consultancy specializing in defense
issues, located in Alexandria, VA (Apr 05-Dec 06). He served as
Professor of National Security & Strategy at the National Defense
University’s Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA
(Mar 94-Apr 05), and as Professor of West Asian Studies
at the U.S. Air War College, Maxwell AFB, AL
(Jul 90-Mar 94).
As a
CENTCOM specialist, Dr. Ahrari has traveled extensively in the
Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia, and has lectured at a number
of leading “think tanks” in the region. He was a regular lecturer
at the NATO School in Oberammergau, Germany, on such topics as Islam
and Democracy in the Middle East, Nation Building in Iraq, and the
need for Ijtihad in the World of Islam. He has been a frequent
guest speaker at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security
Studies, Garmisch, Germany, and a regular lecturer for the Naval
Postgraduate School’s Center for Civil-Military Relations.
Dr.
Ahrari has given lectures on Transnational Terrorism, Nuclear
Proliferation, and Radical Islam to the Pentagon’s Joint Staff
(J-5); as well as at NATO Headquarters in Mons, Belgium; the
Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), New Delhi, India;
the Institute for Defence and Security Studies, Singapore; the
Center for Excellence-Defense Against Terrorism (COE-DAT) at the
Turkish Army High Command, Ankara, Turkey; and the Emirates Center
for Security Studies, UAE. Additionally, he has appeared on
CNN, Fox News, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Australian
Broadcasting Corporation, Hampton Roads Public Broadcasting Channel,
as well as in radio interviews on numerous national and
international radio stations including National Public Radio.
He has
an extensive publication record to his credit, with nine books and
monographs, and more than 400 essays, book reviews, and OpEds in
refereed and non-refereed journals and national and
international newspapers.
