ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Area of Expertise - International Relations, Transnational Issues


 Dr. Rollie Lal joined the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in August 2008 as an associate professor. Her areas of expertise include national interests, political stability, international business, and organized crime. She has written on a wide variety of regions, including India, China, Japan, Iran, Central Asia, and North Africa.

Dr. Lal has served as a political scientist at the Research and Development (RAND) Corporation, conducting research and analysis across a broad spectrum of international security issues for the U.S. Air Force and other government agencies. Previously, she was an assistant professor at the Vlerick Management School in Belgium and Russia, teaching master of business administration courses on international business, as well as courses on doing business in China, India, Russia, and the European Union. In addition, she has served as a Washington correspondent for the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, where she published articles on U.S. domestic and foreign policy.

Dr. Lal is the author of Understanding China and India: Security Implications for the United States and the World (2006) and Central Asia and Its Asian Neighbors: Security and Commerce at the Crossroads (2006). She has also co-authored several books, including Iran’s Political, Demographic, and Economic Vulnerabilities (2008), The Muslim World after 9/11 (2004) and America's Role in Nation-Building: From Germany to Iraq (2003), and has contributed articles in Orbis, the Atlantic Monthly, Financial Times, International Herald Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, San Diego Sun Tribune, and Daily Yomiuri.

Rollie Lal holds a doctorate in international relations and a Master of Arts in strategic studies from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Maryland at College Park. She is conversant in Japanese and Hindi, and has a basic knowledge of Mandarin Chinese, French, and Dutch.
