SENIOR ARMY FELLOW


Lieutenant Colonel S. J. Lee joined the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in July 2008 as the Senior Army Fellow. He has served the preceding five years in Korea with the Combined Forces Command as a Combined-Joint Operational Planner, Aide-de Camp to the Commander Eighth U.S. Army and the United Nations Command as the Assistant Secretary of the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC). UNCMAC is responsible for the implementation, maintenance and oversight of the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement.

Lt. Col. Lee was commissioned in the Infantry in May 1990 and served as an Infantry Bradley Commander in Erlangen, Germany. He subsequently served three years in Okinawa, Japan, as a Special Forces Officer and commanded various Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha teams. He is now serving as a Northeast Asia Army Foreign Area Officer.

Lt. Col. Lee holds a Master of Arts degree in Asian studies with a focus on Korea from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering systems from U.S. Military Academy at West Point. His academic interests are collective security in the Northeast Asia region and the militarization of North Korea.

Lt. Col. Lee’s military education and training includes: Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms Staff Service School, Joint Planning Course, Command and General Staff College, Republic of Korea Army Staff College, Special Forces Advanced Reconnaissance and Target Exploitation Course, Jumpmaster Course (Honor Graduate), Level I Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Course, and Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle Commander’s Course.

Lt. Col. Lee's military awards and decorations include: two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Sapper Tab, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, and other awards and decorations.
