MILITARY PROFESSOR

Major Brian Middleton joined the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in June 2008 as a military professor. He is a U.S. Marine Corps Infantry Officer and Foreign Area Officer specializing in Northeast Asia. Maj. Middleton most recently served as Team Leader, Military Transition Team advising the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 7th Iraqi Army Division. During that time, Maj. Middleton advised and mentored the leadership of the Battalion in Counter-Insurgency operations and conducted combined combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He is currently assigned as the deputy chief for the Trends Analysis Program, and he is the course coordinator for the Center’s four-week long Comprehensive Crisis Management Program.

Maj. Middleton’s experience in the Asia-Pacific region includes two deployments with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit Okinawa, Japan; Humanitarian Assistance Operations in support of United Nations Transition Authority East Timor; and Foreign Area Officer Training, U.S. Embassy, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Additionally, he served two combat tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Company Commander and military transition team leader.

Maj. Middleton holds a Master of Arts degree in national security affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School and a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from Texas A&M University. His military education includes: Infantry Officer’s Course, U.S. Marine Corps Advanced Summer Mountain Leader’s Course, U.S. Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare School (non-resident), U.S. Army Defense Language Institute (Korean language), and U.S. Marine Corps 1st Marine Expeditionary Force Adviser Course (honor graduate).

Maj. Middleton’s personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon.
