TREND ANALYSIS PROGRAM

Area of Expertise - Southeast Asia

J. Nelson D. Ramos

J. Nelson D. Ramos joined the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies from U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) Southeast Asia Policy Division in January 2010. As an International Relations Specialist he was responsible for USPACOM political-military affairs, engagement and policy implementation with Cambodia, Laos, Philippines and Vietnam. He was also involved with USPACOM strategic planning efforts prior to his assignment to the Southeast Asia Policy Division. Mr. Ramos’ interest is primarily in developing bilateral, multilateral and multi-sector arrangements in a cooperative and collaborative environment with partner nations to address governance, transformation, and mutual security concerns such as disaster management, terrorism and transnational threats.

 

Mr. Ramos has over 30 years of active and reserve service with the U.S. Navy. He is a designated Naval Aviator with an anti-submarine warfare specialty flying the P-3 Maritime Patrol Aircraft and sub-specialty in strategic planning. He moved to Hawaii in 1994 with the staff of Patrol and Reconnaissance Forces Pacific responsible for readiness evaluation and tactics development. At the same time he was affiliated with USPACOM as a Navy Reservist later transitioning to a full time member of the staff in 2002.

 

In addition to various service schools and the Air War College, he has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of the Philippines and a Postgraduate Certificate in Information Systems from the University of Southern California. Born and raised in the Philippines, he is fluent in Pilipino and conversant in other Philippine dialects.
