Lieutenant Colonel Matthew B. Schwab joined the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in July 2008 as a military professor. He has 19 years of Army and Joint assignment experience that include ten years of overseas assignments, ranging from tactical and strategic intelligence operations and analysis in the Republic of Korea, Germany and Bosnia, to diplomatic, international affairs and security assistance assignments in Washington D.C. and abroad.

Lt. Col. Schwab has extensive East Asia regional experience. He served as a Platoon Leader in the Republic of Korea, underwent extensive training and language immersion in the People’s Republic of China, served as the desk officer for China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong for the Defense Attaché System, and recently completed a tour as the Defense Attaché in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where he managed one of the largest grant aid security assistance programs in the Asia-Pacific region. Lt. Col. Schwab previously served as the executive officer and aide-de-camp for the Director for Human Intelligence, Defense Intelligence Agency and later as the military assistant and aide to the Director of the newly established office of Community Human Intelligence, Central Intelligence Agency.

Lt. Col. Schwab graduated with a master’s degree in East Asian studies from Harvard University in 2002 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations from Rutgers University in 1989. He is the course coordinator for the Asia-Pacific Orientation Course and the new Senior Executive Asia-Pacific Orientation Course. He is a graduate of several military staff and leadership schools to include the Army Command and General Staff College, the Joint Military Attaché School, and the Defense Institute for Security Assistance Management. He is a fluent Mandarin Chinese speaker. His research interests focus on the impact of economic development on democratic reform/civil society and resource and energy security.
