Guide to Internet Resources

Web pages have a variety of web address endings. Often the ending can give an indication of the kind of information being provided as seen in the table below.

.com (commercial) -- may be trying to sell a product .edu (educational) -- can be serious research or just student class assignments .net (network) -- may provide services to customers
.org (organization) -- nonprofit institution, may be biased .gov (government) -- usually dependable .mil (military) -- usually dependable

Because there is no true control over information posted on the Internet users must carefully evaluate the validity and quality of what they discover. John Hopkins University Sheridan Libraries has produced a through and informative guide to the process of evaluating Internet resources.
